Rationale:
Quantum Technologies hold the potential to significantly impact the Information Society we live in by radically transforming the information technologies that surround us. Namely by opening the prospect of much faster computers, and with a lower carbon footprint, of communication networks providing improved levels of privacy, and of sensors reaching the ultimate levels of precision.
These are sovereignty technologies, with strategic implications, motivating national research & development programmes around the World, as well as at EU-wide level, with public investments of many billions of Euros.
A quantum race to develop and control these emerging information technologies is leading to the establishment of export controls and new scientific diplomacy, raising ethical challenges, and restricting international collaboration. At the same time, there is a growing concern to guarantee an equitable access to the development and use of these novel and potentially transformative technologies, and avoid further widening the knowledge and technological gap between different regions of the World.
The workshop Global Quantum Connections aims at confronting these contradictory perspectives in a constructive way, by bringing together key stakeholders to diagnose the current situation and establish a forum to address these emerging challenges.
