Quantum@Museum

Quantum@Museum is a project developed by PQI – Portuguese Quantum Institute that aims at teaching Quantum Science in Arts and History Museums.

Although this may look like an unexpected venue, there is a lot of Quantum Science being used in the background to study archaeological artefacts and artistic creations, namely to date them, identify the materials they are made from, find older paintings in hidden layers, etc.

A pilot Quantum@Museum project has been developed in collaboration with the Gulbenkian Museum, in Lisbon, Portugal.

In this project, panels were developed explaining in non-technical terms techniques such as Carbon dating, X-ray fluorescence, etc., and displayed next to objects in the museum.

Following this experience and the reception from the public, PQI – Portuguese Quantum Institute is expanding the Quantum@Museum to more techniques, more museums, and more languages.
