PQI Colloquium by Alain Aspect

Prof. Alain Aspect delivered the PQI Colloquium & IST Distinguished Lecture on 23 May 2024, to a packed auditorium in IST's Centro de Congressos. The 330+ people in the audience, coming from different regions in the country, largely surpassed the room's capacity.

Prof. Alain Aspect, from Institut d'Optique & Université Paris-Saclay, talked about the first and second quantum revolutions, including his pioneering experiments on quantum entanglement, for which he was awarded the Nobel prize in Physics in 2022. Furthermore, he discussed how entanglement is a key ingredient for the development of quantum technologies, namely quantum computing, quantum networks, and quantum sensing & metrology.

The event started with the welcome address by Prof. Rogério Colaço, president of Instituto Superior Técnico. Then, Prof. Yasser Omar presented PQI – Portuguese Quantum Institute, and its goals to develop Quantum Information Science and Technology in five different dimensions: research, innovation, policy, education, and outreach. Furthermore, he announced the launch of the Portuguese Quantum Innovation Centre, as well as the PQI Quantum Talents Programme, which will give scholarships to introduce talented university students to research in Quantum Technologies.
